| The Five Stages of Development for School CouncilsThe material presented in this section is work-in-progress. Drop back from time to time for new information related to The Five Stages of Development theory related to Parents Groups and School Councils. The Five Stages Framework reflects the various stages of development that School Councils are evolving through. In Ontario today, there are School Councils at each of the different stages of development shown on the chart below. At each stage, there is a valuable contribution being made by parents within a school. Over time, a council, or a group of parents will achieve mastery of one stage and then move on to the next level. Ultimately, The Five Stages of Development reflects the evolving role of parents groups and school councils within the educational system. In some schools, parents continue to play a role unchanged by the introduction of school councils. Others have advanced to become very comfortable with their advisory role. Still others have progressed beyond advice to become highly focused on initiatives to stimulate school, family and community partnerships - focused on student learning. Have a look at the chart below and try to identify the stage where you think your School Council is today. Then click on the buttons to the left to have a look at the characteristics of Councils at each of the different stages.
