What does this have to do with School Councils? EVERYTHING! One of the key findings of the Road Ahead III, A Report on the Role of School Councils, was that school councils should be fostering parental and community involvement. Creating Partnerships provides a focus for the school council that moves the whole group beyond power struggles or struggles with roles - and focuses the group on student learning. Creating Partnerships is about stimulating the kinds of parental and community involvement that can have a positive impact on student learning. So ... what kinds matter? Here are four links to help answer that question - and more will be added to this page before the end of 2001. Team Up For Kids!! A publication of the U.S. Department of Education with some simple tips. Strong Families, Strong Schools A chapter of the U.S. on-line book dedicated to creating partnerships with parents - for the benefit of students. Ontario's School Councils: Leading Them Forward to Have an Impact on Student Learning A Canadian paper which suggests that, without direction, school councils will have difficulty having a positive impact on student learning. National Network of Partnership Schools - a resource to guide your school in developing a strong School, Family and Community Partnership program. This is the network operated by Dr. Joyce Epstein of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore - featuring the Six Types of Involvement Framework for parental and community involvement. |
